Spring Cleaning: Organizing Your Space and Your Mind as an Educator

Spring Cleaning: Organizing Your Space and Your Mind as an Educator

As the snow melts and the days get longer, spring offers a welcome chance to pause, reflect, and refresh. For Canadian educators, it’s more than just a seasonal shift—it’s the perfect time to regain focus and energy before the final sprint to summer. And while tidying up your classroom is a great place to start, don’t stop there—your mind deserves a spring cleaning too.

Clear the Clutter in Your Classroom

An organized space can do wonders for productivity and peace of mind. If your classroom or home teaching station is starting to feel chaotic, try these simple strategies to breathe new life into your surroundings:

  • Recycle or file old paperwork that’s no longer needed. Free up space for current projects and reduce visual clutter.
  • Use labelled bins or baskets to store seasonal items, extra supplies, or resources you don’t need daily.
  • Create a dedicated area for your daily teaching essentials so you’re not hunting for that one elusive whiteboard marker every morning.
  • Get your students involved! A group clean-up activity can be both fun and empowering.

Just a few small changes can make your teaching space feel calmer, more functional, and more inspiring.

Declutter Your Mind, Too

Spring cleaning shouldn’t stop at your desk. Teaching is a high-energy, high-demand job, and it’s easy for stress to pile up. Here are a few ways to refresh your mindset:

  • Reflect daily. Take 10 minutes at the end of each day to jot down what went well, what challenged you, and what you’re grateful for.
  • Try mindfulness. Even a short breathing break during recess or between lessons can help you reset.
  • Use tools that support wellness. Our Wellness Project Self-Discovery Workbook is designed for teens aged 12–18 but is also a great reminder for educators: you matter, too.
  • Let go of perfection. Focus on what truly helps you and your students thrive, and give yourself permission to release the rest.

Refresh Your Planning Routine

Your planner isn’t just a calendar—it’s your command centre. Whether you use it for tracking lesson plans, long-term goals, or quick to-dos, spring is a great time to make it work even better for you:

  • Revisit and adjust your long-term goals for the rest of the year.
  • Add new tabs, highlight key dates, or colour-code your pages for quick reference.
  • Sprinkle in some inspiration—quotes, doodles, or uplifting stickers can keep things light and motivating.

If you haven’t yet tried our Legacy Lesson Plan Books: Wellness Project Edition – Open Format, it includes 352 thoughtfully designed pages to help you stay on top of it all—from monthly calendars to meeting notes and classroom layouts.
